Peter or Pete? Joseph or Joe? Use LinkedIn Recommendations to find out…

January 11th, 2013 | by Jason Alba |

I don’t go by my first name, I go by my middle name.  If you call me by my first name I know you got my name from some government list or something like that.  You immediately disqualify yourself from being legit if you don’t call me Jason.

Could be the same issue with the Peters and Josephs of the world, right?  How do you know how to address them so you don’t immediately disqualify yourself?

The first place I check is their Recommendations on LinkedIn. That’s where I can see how people who supposedly know them address them.

That’s where I can see if I’m supposed to call you Peter or Pete.

Yes, this doesn’t matter to everyone, but if you address the wrong person the wrong way, that could be the end of your communication.  Take a few minutes to do the research :)

    Funny you mention this:

For about 10 yrs in my career (I am 48), I was known as Chuck. These days it’s 99% Charlie, yet this week I received a recommendation from someone who always calls me ‘Charlie’ yet wrote ‘Charles’ on LI.

“Just don’t call me late to dinner!”

    LOL that is really funny!

I’m almost always legitimately called Jason but every once in a while someone calls me “Jase” which I like, but it’s so different…. My first thought is “wait a minute, are we BFFs?”

And, I agree… don’t call me late for dinner :p
