Want to own a LinkedIn Group? Expect lots of e-mails!

June 30th, 2008 | by Jason Alba |

Well, maybe not “lots of e-mails,” but you will likely get e-mails as people join your group.  Here’s what they see when they join:

When you click on the “Please notify the group manager” link, it opens an e-mail with your e-mail client (one of my pet peeves on the Internet) and this subject:

I would like to join your group; my membership is pending approval

Just so you know, when I get that, I go in and approve the request (no more than once a day, I wish it could be once a week), and then reply back to say “okay!” or something simple like that.

I wish LinkedIn would get more serious about maintaining groups.

I’ve had membership in two groups pending for months. It has become obvious that they have been abandoned by the owner of the group. Not a real issue but just a minor annoyance. However, I would think if a group owner doesn’t respond within X months then the group should be deactivated.

On the other side of the coin there are some topics that have several groups, which I think is a foolish.

I’ve also found some individuals that have established an incredible number of groups to help them boost their connection count by being a group leader. Personally I think there should be a limit on the number of groups an individual can create. However, if such a limit existed they’d probably just create bogus profiles to get around it.

In general LinkedIn groups really seem to be the wild west of LinkedIn and is very unlike the higher standards of the rest of the site.

I am the owner of The Rolling Rack Fashion & Apparel group on LinkedIn. When I approve a new member I send them a welcome email. It reads something like this:

“Hi (name here) and Welcome to The Rolling Rack group. Check out our blog, our members and coming soon our events! Thank you for joining us and if you have any suggestions/contributions or just comments please contact me at your convenience.

Just six short days ago TheRollingRack group was born. And, as of today there are over 60 members in our community and I am more excited than ever! But, let me get to the chase. Here’s a few updates you should know about:

    1. New JOB alerts have been posted on the blog. If you click on a link within the post it will redirect you to our new website! It’s nothing much to sneeze about yet but it’s there and functional for now.
    2. If you’d like to be featured in a “Spotlight” segment please fill out the following questionnaire and email me the answers:
    a: Name:
b: Current and recent employment (job title and company):
    c: Education:
d: Special factoid about yourself or company:
Also you may choose to include a recent photo of yourself if available. I will not post any confidential contact info unless you specifically request it to be posted.
    3. I screen every applicant before they get into our group. There have been several who have been refused entry because they are recruiters, etc, that are not necessarily in the Fashion industry. If you want me to accept membership from folks like that from now on, please let me know.

Thanks and have a great day!
