One thing I do when requesting a recommendation - is to provide that person a couple of points to consider in the writing - in their own words and style of course. 

For example, I recently requested a recommendation for my work as a board member. I asked the chapter president if she would comment on my leadership style and the programming quality. 

Because otherwise you can end up w/ something too vague.
