I don't see many others doing what ____ has done here. AFAIK _____ is one of the top users and evangelists of LinkedIn, so it's the most comfortable, familiar, value-add place for him to get his son an account... heck, who knows if LI will even be around when his son is old enough to use it! Anyway, I liken this to the idea of buying a domain for your kid, but this was the first time I've seen this on LinkedIn, hence the post. Good and fair perspective, thanks for weighing in.
