This is a great point - sometimes I feel like I'm leading potential clients on a merry-go-round, but they're clicking through so fast they don't get to see the real content (i.e. blog posts, etc) that I want them to see... Thanks for your perspective, it's motivated me to re-think my 'path to action'.

I agree; kinda.

Social media sites should be used to find people within those networks to introduce yourself too. Then invite them to visit your site for more information.

However, promoting your social sites can increase your overall exposure in the search engines because Google works to display highly relevant and related content first.

This *can* help you command the top spots in Google for your name and effectively give you the control to publish what you want others to know.

If you do a search for my full name, Ash Buckles, you will see that 18 of the top 20 are my sites and profile pages. This allows me to speak to many different audiences very quickly without any negative press or irrelevant information.

I just wrote a post about this. You can <a href="http://www.ashbuckles.com/how-social-media-profiles-raise.html" rel="nofollow">read it here</a>.

My recommendation is to carefully link to your social profiles and do so in a less visible manner so as not to distract visitors and compete with yourself.

Very good point. One of my pet peeves about invitations is when people wishing to connect only use the boilerplate "I'd like to add you to my network." text. I prefer a more custom message that shows a desire really to connect, instead of adding a number to a list.
