I am hoping and wishing they add some basic functionality to LinkedIn Groups that would allow better networking through a small set of tools, such as a calendar of events and maybe a blog. No, I don't want it turned into Facebook, please. I don't want to bite anyone. I *do* want to be able to actually do something with the group *as a group* and *through the LinkedIn Group*.

I created two groups so far for private networks I manage in "real life". To me, right now, Groups seems no better than merit badges on your profile. I'm a little disappointed.

Jason,

A couple of days ago, I made a <a href="http://www.google.com/coop/cse?cx=012022021532202637257%3An0e8vkkccdq" rel="nofollow">LinkedIn Groups Search</a> custom search engine using Google Coop/CSE.

So far the user response has been great and it seems to work very well.

Thanks for sharing that directory.

Animal, I can totally see the value you state as a group admin. For the members they can sign up for this quasi-newsletter... so that's another value - but none of the groups I'm a member of send these types of informational messages...

alas, I'm still stuck wondering what value a member gets... (this makes 2 things, though, so thanks for sharing).

Jason,

As you know I started a LinkedIn group for The Recruiting Animal Show. I use it as a subscribers list. Every week after the show, I send out a link. If anyone wants to unsubscribe it's easy. After all, they are in touch with me directly.

I also use it to let people know that they can let me know if they want to go on the hot seat.

I think I decided to spare my regular Recruitosphere friends the mailout since they already know about me. But if you want me to include I'll be happy to do so.

Almost all of my members are recruiters but a few other people join because I think you can get access to people who aren't in your LinkeIn network via their membership in a common group. (You would have to check on that but I believe it's true).
